Due to the increasing relevance of the internet to everyone especially the children and youth who use the internet for various activities including school work, online gaming and social networking Nigerians on Tuesday, February 7, joined the rest of the world to celebrate the Safer Internet Day (SID) 2016.
The aim of the event is to reach out to young internet users (target group 10 - 18 years old) and share information with them on how they can enjoy the multiple benefits offered by the medium of the Internet, while at the same time, staying safe from harm and exposure to age-inappropriate content.

This year’s theme being "Be The Change: Unite For A Better Internet", Google and its partners trained over 50 students from various schools across Lagos state on the dangers of sharing naked pictures, personal information online and cyber bullying .

For the third year running, the 2017 edition of Safer Internet Day which was organized in Nigeria by Google in partnership with the NFVCB and HomeVida took place at the VirginRose Resorts Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event featured fun and educative activities like balloon challenge and quiz.
Since 2004, Safer Internet Day (SID) has been celebrated on the second day of the second week of the second month of the year. SID seeks to promote safer and more responsible use of online technologies, now including mobile Internet.

Birthed in Europe, Safer Internet Day has grown rapidly spreading to over hundred countries across the world involving thousands of people promoting the safe use of the internet.
Last year the event held in Lagos at Queen’s College and over 1,000 students were trained. The students were given sound advice from dignitaries and keynote speakers on how to be safe online.
